MARCH 2019 IGNOMINIOUS ABSURDIRTY OF THE MONTH: THE IGGY

1. Senator Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota). Say what? According to Rounds, Donald Trump having an affair with Stormy Daniels—shortly after his youngest child was born—and then paying her hush money to keep the story under wraps before the election, is okay in his book because it just proves that Trump really, really loves his family:

“I honestly think this president loves his family … I think it has as much to do with trying not to have public discussions about something that is, for him, a private matter … and I don’t think he wanted his family to go through this.”

Some might suggest that Trump could have better proven his love of family by not having an affair with a porn star—again, shortly after his youngest child was born—but hey, who can argue with a family values guy like Mike Rounds? Of course, one does wonder if Mrs. Rounds is somewhere thinking, “If Mike loves me that much, I’ll kill him.”

Leave it to a human tragedy to bring out the ignominious. This time it is the horrific mosque shootings in New Zealand. Here are a couple examples.

2. Texas Republican Louie Gohmert. Following the massacre of at least 49 Muslims in Christchurch, an Australian senator chimed in to that “The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.” That didn’t go over so well outside the community of white supremacists, but it did with America’s dumbest congressman, Louie Gohmert.

Not wanting to be left out, Gohmert rushed out his own press release.

“There are courts, dispute resolutions, and legislatures to resolve controversies – there is no place for cold blooded murders. Though New Zealand does not have the death penalty, hopefully its people, through their justice system, will send the message loudly and clearly that such barbarity from anyone will not be tolerated.”

So, Louie Gohmert’s first reaction to the death of 49 people is wishing for more death. That’s good to know … but it’s that first sentence that’s the real winner.

The only “dispute” that was being resolved by the shooter in New Zealand was that there were Muslims in the country where he lived. What that first sentence from Gohmert says is that, if you happen to be a violent white nationalist, and you have a concern about there being non-white people in your community, you shouldn’t shoot people. Or at least, not right away. Not when you have white nationalist legislators willing to take up your cause. Why not first see if you can get a judge or, hey, maybe a congressman to help you kick out those “invaders”?

3. Rush Limbaugh. Leave it to the blowhard Limbaugh to find leftist evil lurking behind virtually every horrific event. He offered this latest pearl of wisdom on the New Zealand mass shooting.

“The idea that there is far more crazed right-wing terrorism in America than there is any other kind is nothing more than a media narrative manufactured out of whole cloth, and it's just waiting for events like this to take place, and this is what happens, folks. I don't know, you probably get up and you see this news story and you just -- in addition to all of the emotion you have over the sheer shock, terror, and horror of it all, then you realize you're going to face a whole day of the politicization of it. You realize you're going to face a whole day of Donald Trump being blamed for it, or you being blamed for it, or things you believe in being blamed for it.”

“Another thing that happens here when these events happen, you have all kinds of speculation that erupts. And there is an ongoing theory -- Mr. Snerdley, correct me if I'm wrong about this. There's an ongoing theory that the shooter himself may in fact be a leftist who writes the manifesto and then goes out and performs the deed purposely to smear his political enemies, knowing he's going to get shot in the process. You know you just can't -- you can't immediately discount this. The left is this insane, they are this crazy. And then if that's exactly what the guy is trying to do then he's hit a home run, because right there on Fox News: "Shooter is an admitted white nationalist who hates immigrants."

Meanwhile, here’s what the shooter actually said about Trump: “As a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose? Sure. As a policy maker and leader? Dear god no.”

Rather than admit maybe, just maybe, Trump’s incendiary rhetoric is a contributing factor to global acts of violence — and that he’s a standard-bearer around the world for xenophobia and hate — the right-wing can’t help invent scenarios based on zero evidence.

Because that’s how they roll. We now live in a country where truth and evidence are simply irrelevant to a significant portion of the population. Sickening.

4. Right Wing Commentator Glen Beck. Rising from the ashes of his failing media dung heap, Beck has re-emerged to prove that nobody is a better at hyperbolic inanities than the once and future master of the blackboard arts. Best known as a conspiracy crackpot, Beck has faded into the ether while grasping desperately at straws to revive his joke of a career. However, Fox News, the one platform that still honors the brand of idiocy that Beck excels in, has thrown him an anchor in the hopes of inflating the prospects of Donald Trump's reelection. What could go wrong?

Glenn Beck was on Hannity's show this month claiming that "If the Republicans don't win in this next election, I think we are officially at the end of the country as we know it."

That's a bold statement. Especially coming from someone who said that ObamaCare would end the country, and that Obama's reelection would be the end of the country, and that gay marriage would be the end of the country, and that Common Core education reform would be the end of the country, and that fluorides poisoning our vital fluids (h/t Dr. Strangelove) would be the end of the country. Virtually everything that Beck ever mentioned would produce the onset of an apocalypse that would be unavoidable.

Bandwagon Beck has come a long way since November 2016 when he said of Trump:

"This guy [Trump] is dangerously unhinged. And, for all the things people have said about me over the years, I should be able to spot Dangerously Unhinged."

Amen.

5. Missouri Representative Andrew McDaniel (R-Deering). It is near unthinkable that any private company in America could be elevated to the point where the government picks & chooses winners — by forcing all citizens to own their product. It, however, wasn’t unthinkable to Representtive Andrew McDaniel who put forward his own resolution Missouri House Bill 1108.

The bill has a simple demand.  The McDaniel Militia act would offset the entire cost of an AR-15 to everyone between 18 and 35 who is eligible to own a weapon, and then would require them to do so.

From the bill text:

4. Any person who qualifies as a resident on August 28, 2019, and who does not own an AR-15 shall have one year to purchase an AR-15.  Any resident qualifies as a resident after August 28, 2019, and does not own an AR-15 shall purchase an AR-15 no later than one year after qualifying as a resident.

5. A resident may sell an AR-15, provided that the resident owns at least one AR-15 for the entire time he or she qualifies as a resident.

What isn’t clear is how this goes along with the other bill put forward by the Representative, Missouri House Bill 1052, which requires everyone 21 and over to own a hand gun.

Missouri Republicans, now intent to tell families how they must spend their money — and on which specific vendors — seem to be saying the Government has a duty to force you to buy two weapons, for every qualifying adult. Don’t worry, you’ll get a tax credit later.

No word on how the Deering Republican expects those in poverty to pay for the weaponry.

And the winner is . . .

Close call between Senator Rounds and Missouri Rep. Andrew McDaniel, but for it's implications I have to go with McDaniel.
